Quo vadis, SAP HANA?
In an expert contribution published in the S@pport magazine, Dr. Thilo Simon and Dr. Matthias Merz from Camelot ITLab have examined the perspectives of the new “SAP HANA” solution. SAP wants to be in a position to run its own data warehouse product “SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse” (BW) on this in-memory database by the end of the year, followed by “SAP Business Suite” in the coming years.
The article comes to the conclusion that in-memory computing provides many advantages for businesses, such as up-to-date reporting on operational data and great performance benefits for applications. In addition, the technical necessity for separating OLTP and OLAP systems will become obsolete in many cases. Whether or not this is actually a paradigm shift in the data warehouse area has to be proven through practical application of this technology in the coming years.
